AKTU Grace Marks Rules: Complete Guide to CBCS Passing Policy, Credit Normalization & E Grade Explained

AKTU (Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University, Lucknow) has implemented detailed grace mark policies for CBCS courses to help students pass if they fall slightly short of the required marks. This guide explains the official Grace Rule, including how E grades work, course-wise mark limits, and credit normalization examples.

1. What are Grace Marks in AKTU?

Grace marks are a small number of marks given by the university to students who narrowly miss passing a subject or semester. These marks ensure that the student is declared PASS without changing SGPA or CGPA significantly. The marks are limited and vary by course.

2. Eligibility for Grace Marks

3. Course-wise Maximum Grace Marks

CourseSessionMaximum Grace Marks / Year
B.Tech2016–17 onwards07 Marks
B.Pharm (PCI)2019–20 onwards05–07 Marks
MCA (AICTE Model)2020–21 onwards10 Marks
MBA / BVoc2018–19 onwards03–10 Marks

4. Understanding the E Grade

When grace marks are awarded, AKTU gives the student a grade “E”. This means the subject is passed using grace marks. However, the E grade carries no credit points, so SGPA and CGPA remain unchanged.

Example: If passing marks are 40 and a student scores 38, the university may give 2 grace marks and assign grade “E”.

5. Credit Normalization

If a student passes all subjects but SGPA is slightly below 5.0, AKTU allows credit normalization up to 0.25 to declare the student as PASS for that academic year.

6. Withdrawing Grace Marks

Students can withdraw grace marks within 60 days by submitting a notarized affidavit to the university. Once withdrawn, they must reappear in the subject’s next exam; grace cannot be restored later.
